What do I do?

I work with highly motivated, hard-working, passionate, caring, loving adults who have been facing problems with their relationship with food, self-image and self-esteem. Since 2017, I have been helping people struggling with eating-related problems, such as an unbalanced diet, going from restrictive diets to binge eating or people dealing with emotional eating problems. I have found that people with those kinds of difficulties are often perfectionists, with a black or white way of thinking, often the ones taking care of everyone, but neglecting to take care of themselves.

During our short-term work together, I will guide you and help you understand your eating behaviour, a behaviour that might have once served you but is no longer the best choice for you. I will help you create different coping mechanisms that are closer to who you are now and what you need in order to grow to the best possible version of yourself.

How do I do it?

Our sessions will be conducted online, on a weekly basis, on a date and time we will agree, with each session lasting 30 minutes. Before our initial session, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire that will help me tailor the course to your specific needs. Each session has a different topic, for example, health, body image, intuitive eating, perfectionism, black and white way of thinking, self care etc. Let’s explore each session.

Sessions

Session 1

The first session is introductory. I will get to know you and the problem a bit better and possibly ask some questions derived from your answers to the questionnaire. In this session, I will try to understand what drives you to food and what your expectations are and we will set our goals. An exercise or a video will be provided at the end of the session.

We will possibly start with a conversation based on the exercise or the video of session 1. Based on your answers to the questionnaire, we will talk either about health and the relation to body weight and/or the diet culture and how it affects our everyday life and the choices we make. We will focus on your body image and how you perceive yourself. Depending on our time, we will either complete an exercise in session or you will be asked to complete it at home during the week.

This week we will have an introduction to intuitive eating, or it could be a better understanding of it, if you are already familiar with it. When working in a therapeutic setting, one of the goals we set is for the person to be able to eat freely, meaning without following a meal plan, understanding hunger and satiety signals and honoring the needs of the body. During this week you will be asked to do an exercise with me and later alone at home.

We will start with a small reflection of the past week and the exercise you had to do. Also, during this session, we will try to see the differences between physical hunger and emotional hunger. We will try to understand when the body is sending us hunger ques and possibly try to understand when we are full. An exercise will be given at the end of the session.

Based on your personal characteristics, your answers from the initial questionnaire, and your needs we will adjust those 2 sessions. More specifically, we might explore perfectionism, black and white way of thinking, emotional and practical flexibility, self care, understanding your needs better or we might simply expand more on the previous topics, if that’s what you need. I like to leave room for more flexible sessions, since life is unpredictable and we need to learn to adjust to that too. So, we will adjust those sessions and the exercises accordingly.

This will be our closing session. During this session, we will possibly go over certain exercises again, evaluate the progress, we will reflect on the learnt concepts and tools, and we might set goals for the future and see what would help you achieve them. Lastly, we will say our good-byes, which is such an important part of any relationship or collaboration.

Important note!

Each session will be adjusted to your specific needs, so some of the topics might not be covered if there is a priority for something else or if some concepts do not apply to your needs. This is why it’s really important to answer the initial questionnaire as honestly as possible.
